Alex Armstrong was born in 1944.

On completion of his education in Scotland, he joined the Ministry of Defence in 1965. From 1981 to 1985, as a member of the UK Delegation to NATO in Brussels, he met and worked with Freddy Bonnart. Prior to this particular appointment, Alex attended the NATO Defence College in Rome undertaking a six-month course. He subsequently attended the 1992 Course at the Royal College of Defence Studies in London.

Leaving the public sector in 1995, he then ran a lobbying organisation concerned with countryside issues for several years. Following that, on a consultancy basis, he advised a number of NGOs and small companies on general management.

In addition to his support for the FBB Trust, Alex is a trustee of the Iwokrama International Centre for RainForest Conservation and Development in Guyana, which seeks to demonstrate the sustainable use of tropical forests for ecological, social and economic purposes. He is a trustee of a Wiltshire charity which helps fund volunteer activities and aids the socially disadvantaged. Alex is also a Board member of the recently created Angling Trust, which represents the interests of all types of anglers in the UK and speaks on behalf of the sport.

Alex Armstrong lives in Wiltshire, and is married with a family of four children and five grandchildren.
