Jeremy Jarvis was born in 1957 and educated at Colchester Royal Grammar School and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. He joined the Civil Service on graduating in 1979 and has spent most of his career in the Ministry of Defence. His posts have covered a variety of policy areas, working with each of the Services and in the Centre, including stints abroad in the UK Delegation to NATO in Brussels and the Sovereign Base Areas Administration in Cyprus.
He was promoted to the Senior Civil Service on joining the Cabinet Office in 1998, where he was responsible for strategic assessments on the Middle East, Asia and international terrorism. He attended RCDS as a Member in 2002, completing the Africa study tour before leaving slightly early on posting to Cyprus as Chief Officer, Sovereign Base Areas for six months. From mid-2003 to 2007 he was Director, Policy and Defence Relations (South) in the MOD, responsible for policy advice on overseas security issues in the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and for the UK’s bilateral defence relations and military assistance programmes in those regions.
Since October 2007 he has been the civilian member of the Senior Directing Staff (2-star) at the Royal College of Defence Studies, where he is responsible for course design and delivery, the MA programme and mentoring his share of the senior officers and officials attending the long course. He is married to Diane and they have four grown-up children. His other interests include the Church, cricket, military history, strategic games and bell-ringing.
